OUR PENRHOS ZERO, RASPBERRY IS HERE!

We are absolutely thrilled to announce that our first non alcoholic botanical spirit is here!

After over a year of experimenting, testing and tasting our Zero is available online and in shops and we couldn’t be happier with what we have produced.

We are the first to make a distilled non alcoholic spirit with real fruit juice, which could make us either mad or a genius! Our secret recipe consists of specially selected botanicals including junipers, peppercorns and our own wibbly-wobbly blueberries creating an elegant and sophisticated drink.

THE ZERO STORY

As we have mentioned before, combatting fruit waste is extremely important to us and we have wanted to use our wibbly wobbly raspberries from the beginning of Penrhos Spirits journey, We saw a growing need for a gin alternative last year but we wanted ours to be different and special. After many discussion between the team we decided that creating a raspberry pink non alcoholic seemed the best way to champion our amazing raspberries grown here at Penrhos.

We wanted to make sure that our Zero held the same qualities as our gin, which meant it had to be distilled in Connie with our Penrhos blueberries and it is certainly something we are proud to include in our range. Our Penrhos Zero will quickly become your new preferred weekday tipple as we have created a gin alternative that you will enjoy drinking dry with all the flavour, ready to be enjoyed as you would your favourite gin.

SERVING SUGGESTIONS

Our Zero is to be served as an alternative to gin, for the days when you fancy all the flavour without the alcohol.

ZERO & TONIC

Always start with your favourite glass and plenty of ice, this helps to keep the drink cooler for longer and less dilution, because who wants a watery gin and tonic? Then grab Penrhos Zero and add 50ml, top up with your chosen tonic, give it a gentle stir and garnish with plenty of raspberries and mint.

Most importantly, sit back, relax and enjoy a Penrhos Zero Raspberry and tonic!

HOW WE MAKE OUR RHUBARB GIN

Our rhubarb is made by adding real rhubarb juice to our award winning London Dry which is already packed with flavour. It is mixed together for up to eight hours for the perfect blend leaving you with a pink cloudy tasty rhubarb gin.

WHAT MAKES OUR RHUBARB GIN TO SPECIAL?

When we started out on the journey to becoming distillers the most important thing was celebrating British farming and using real fruit rather than an extract or a flavoring. This helps to give our Rhubarb gin the real fruity tangy kick of rhubarb that can’t be created with anything else.

WHAT MIXER SHOULD YOU USE WITH RHUBARB GIN?

Rhubarb Gin with Glass of Gin

THE RHUBARB GIN AND TONIC

Always begin with your favourite gin glass and plenty of ice.

Pour 50ml of Penrhos Rhubarb over the ice so the ice chills the gin.

Top up with an Indian Tonic and garnish with a slice of orange. The orange helps to bring the rhubarb to life and it will help to create the best G&T you have ever had!

RHUBARB AND GINGER ALE

Using a hightball glass full over ice pour 50cl of Penrhos Rhubarb and let it run over the ice.

Add a squeeze or fresh orange (or a splash of orange juice) and top up with ginger beer or ale.

Garnish with mint – top tip, make sure you smack your mint to release the flavour!

Why apple gin cocktails are the best!

Apple harvest is slowly coming to an end on the farm so we wanted to celebrate some amazing cocktails that can be made with our Penrhos Apple & Elderflower gin.

For those of you who are new to Penrhos, we make this gin using the wibbly wobbly apples that don’t make it to the supermarket due to being misshapen. They still tasted amazing and are juiced and added to our wonderful gin. We also use Herefordshire hedgerow elderflower which works perfectly with the fruity apples.

In September we were able to add a Great Taste Awards to our list of awards and our Apple & Elderflower is able to wear the medal with pride.

Why not try some of these amazing Apple & Elderflower cocktails!

London dry Gin

We have won another award!

We are very excited to say that one year after we were awarded a gold medal at the Sip Awards in California we have now won a silver medal for our Hand-Crafted London Dry at the International Wine & Spirits Competition. This year we were judged alongside 800 other gin producers, where Penrhos was put into the London dry category.

A London Dry is the technical term for gins which start with a neutral base spirit and have included all their botanicals in the distillation phase of the production. IWSC Judges in this category were looking for a well-balanced level of botanicals to support the star of the show, the juniper. Our London Dry is distilled with our own Blueberries, Cherry Blossom and Honey and was award 91 points, therefore, handing us a silver medal.

We are extremely pleased to be winning this award as we are thrilled with our London Dry which is also the base to our Rhubarb, Apple and Elderflower Gin and our Blueberry Liqueur. It’ is a real stamp of approval from the industry, and we’re very humbled to have Penrhos Spirits recognised in this way. Like many, we have had to adapt and change this year and it’s brilliant to be able to celebrate and cherish the little moments of happiness with an award like this.”

Our London Dry is especially smooth, fresh and pure. We recommend serving 50ml of Penrhos Dry Gin over plenty of ice with tonic, blueberries and mint. Or to try something different, 50ml London Dry, Elderflower Tonic with sliced strawberries, cucumber and mint. Enjoy!

Why do we make Copper Distilled gin?

27.07.20

INTRODUCING THE MAGIC BEHIND THE SCENES AT PENRHOS

If you have been lucky enough to see our amazing still you will know that it is absolutely stunning and we are still amazed by its beauty nearly two years on.

When we embarked on our distilling journey it became apparent that many distilleries like to name their still. With a lot of discussion and thought we arrived on the name ‘Connie‘ for our still. Connie was the name of Dickie’s Grandmother who used to rear calves in the shed when Dickie was a child, so it seemed the perfect choice for our still which now holds the space in the converted cattle shed.

Our still Connie holds more than just beauty and the copper plays an essential role in the process of making our Penrhos Gin. Stills can be made of many materials such as, aluminum, iron and stainless steel. However, we find that copper is the very best for one reason… TASTE.

In simple terms, the copper helps to remove any impurities that are created during the distillation process. The unwanted aromas and flavours stick to the copper and are removed, rather than into your gin meaning you are able to enjoy a super smooth London Dry gin!

HAPPY DRINKING!

Happy Fathers Day!

21.07.20

HELLO TO ALL OF OUR PENRHOS FANS.

We have had a very exciting 2 years, growing, producing and distilling our fabulous hand crafted gins. We do not want to ignore the current situation of Covid-19 and we are missing our amazing customers who have supported us through our gin journey. We cannot wait to visit our pubs, bars and restaurants for a drink soon.

Over the next few weeks, we’d like you to get to know our team at Penrhos. First off, to celebrate Fathers day we’d like to introduce the brains behind Penrhos Spirits, Richard ‘Dickie’ Williams and Charlie ‘Dinger’ Turner.

Dickie was born at Penrhos ‘a few’ years ago and has farming running through his bones. This was installed in him by the famous Johnnie from a very young age. Charlie was born a couple of years later just down the road in Weobley and the essence of farming was apparent from a young age too.

They met in their early teens at the local Rugby Club, Luctonians where they become firm friends. I am not sure at that age they would have expected to be farming together or producing our Award Winning Gins! Dickie pursued his career in Agriculture and went to Walford to study whilst Charlie was interested in Science and went up to Newcastle where he gained a Biological Science and Marine Biology degree, but it wasn’t long until his farming roots brought him back to Herefordshire. Both are Fathers to three Children, who would agree they have the best Dad!

As time moved on both ventured into Fruit Farming and 6 years ago they decided to merge together to create Penrhos Fruit which can now be found in Waitrose.  After chatting at a party it became apparent to them that there was a lot of waste from the Cherry Blossom and fruit that didn’t make it to the supermarket due to being too small or the wrong shape. They put their heads together and decided Gin would be the perfect way to utilize our amazing fruit and two years ago Penrhos Spirits was born, which the rest of the families were very happy about! Their passion for Gin was born and this brings them to where they are today, 3 Gins and a Blueberry Liqueur later with exciting new things on the horizon.

HAPPY FATHERS DAY FROM ALL AT PENRHOS.

Elderflower Cordial Recipe

Elderflower cocktail

APPLE AND ELDERFLOWER SPRITZ

ICE | 50ML PENRHOS APPLE AND ELDERFLOWER | 25ML ELDERFLOWER CORDIAL | 25ML LIME JUICE | TONIC WATER | ELDERFLOWER TO GARNISH

Throughout May and June we have been busy picking Elderflower from the hedgerow around the farm to make our amazing Apple and Elderflower gin. As we had some spare we thought we would make our own Penrhos Elderflower Cordial – We decided to use the famous Marry Berry’s recipe.

  • Put 1.5kg sugar and 1.5 litre/3lb 5oz water into a large pan. Bring to the boil, stirring, until the sugar has dissolved. Remove from the heat and cool.
  • Slice the 2 lemons thinly. Put into a large plastic box or a bucket.
  • Add about 25 elderflower heads to the lemons with the citric acid and the Campden tablets. (Be Carful as Campden tablets produce an irritant gas if inhaled. Keep your face well back from the mixture.) Pour over the cooled sugar syrup. Cover and leave for a couple of days.

  • Sieve and strain through muslin into sterilised bottles and store in the fridge. Can be served over ice with water. But we prefer it in our cocktails.
